The gap it’s coming to fill
Roughly 2.6 billion people worldwide still have no internet access at all, and millions more in rural and remote areas make do with slow, unreliable connections because laying fiber or cable to sparsely populated regions rarely pencils out for telecom companies. That’s the gap satellite internet exists to fill — and until recently, Starlink had it largely to itself. For travelers, remote workers, off-grid homes, disaster-response teams, and rural communities with no realistic path to broadband, satellite has gone from a niche backup option to, in many cases, the only option.
The Leo Nano is Amazon’s answer to a more specific slice of that gap: portability. Even Starlink’s standard dish, while excellent for a fixed home setup, isn’t something most people want to lug around. The Starlink Mini narrowed that gap, and the Leo Nano is Amazon’s bid to narrow it further — a terminal small and light enough to disappear into a bag, aimed at people who need reliable internet wherever they happen to be, not just at a fixed address. It’s also Amazon’s broader play to insert itself into a market it currently has zero presence in, using its logistics, cloud, and manufacturing scale to compete on price in a way few other companies realistically could.
What is the Leo Nano?
The Leo Nano is the smallest of three customer terminals Amazon has built for its Leo satellite network, sitting below the mid-tier Leo Pro and the enterprise-grade Leo Ultra. It’s a flat, self-contained antenna that measures roughly 7 by 7 inches and weighs about 2.2 pounds — small enough to toss in a backpack next to a laptop. Amazon is billing it as the most portable high-speed satellite terminal it has ever built, and on paper it’s even smaller than Starlink’s popular Mini dish, which measures closer to 11.5 by 10 inches.
Like the rest of the Leo lineup, the Nano is a phased-array antenna that talks directly to satellites orbiting roughly 390 miles up. That’s the whole appeal of low Earth orbit (LEO) internet: traditional satellite services park a single satellite around 22,000 miles overhead, which adds noticeable lag. Being so much closer to Earth is what lets Leo — and Starlink before it — offer latency closer to cable or fiber.
Amazon says the Nano runs on its own custom silicon, a chip called Prometheus that packs a 5G modem, a cellular base station, and microwave backhaul onto one board at a fraction of the cost of buying those parts separately. The terminal is also designed as an all-in-one modem-and-router, so there shouldn’t be a separate router box to set up — though we won’t know for sure until real units ship.
Speed and performance
The Nano is rated for download speeds up to 100 Mbps. That won’t beat its own siblings — the Leo Pro is rated up to 400 Mbps and the enterprise-focused Leo Ultra tops out around 1 Gbps down with 400 Mbps up — but 100 Mbps is genuinely plenty for 4K streaming, video calls, and remote work. Amazon isn’t really pitching the Leo Nano as a household’s main connection anyway; it’s aimed at travel, camping, RVs, boats, and short-term setups where portability matters more than raw speed.
Does it work indoors?
No. Like Starlink and every other satellite terminal, the Leo Nano needs a clear, unobstructed view of the sky to connect. Walls, roofing, and even glass will block or badly degrade the signal, so setting it on a windowsill isn’t a real workaround — at best you might get a weak, unreliable connection right up against a wide-open window, and even that’s a stretch. It’s built to sit outdoors, whether that’s on a table, mounted to a vehicle, or propped up next to a tent, with nothing overhead — trees, roof eaves, nearby buildings — blocking its line of sight to the satellites passing overhead.
Does it work with an external antenna or dish?
No — and there’s no accessory announced that changes that. The Nano isn’t a receiver that connects to a separate dish; the flat 7-by-7-inch panel is the antenna itself, a phased array that talks to the satellites directly. There’s nothing to plug an external dish or antenna into, the way you might add an external antenna to a Wi-Fi router for better range. Amazon also hasn’t announced any official mounting or cable-extension accessories for the Nano, unlike Starlink, which sells its own mounts and has a large third-party accessory market built around it. If you need better performance or more range than the Nano offers, the answer in Amazon’s current lineup is to step up to a different terminal — the Leo Pro or Leo Ultra — rather than add hardware to the Nano itself.

The comparison Amazon clearly wants people to make is with the Starlink Mini, and the two are natural rivals. Here’s how they stack up on what’s known so far:

Size favors the Nano — it’s genuinely smaller and lighter, and that matters when every ounce counts in a pack. But Starlink still holds two advantages Amazon can’t manufacture overnight: a constellation of more than 10,000 satellites already in orbit, serving upward of 12 million subscribers in more than 160 countries as of mid-2026, and a Mini dish that’s been field-tested for well over a year, with reviewers regularly clocking real-world speeds between 100 and 200 Mbps. Amazon Leo’s network, by comparison, had somewhere around 375 satellites in orbit as of mid-2026 — meaning early service will be limited to specific regions rather than the near-global coverage Starlink already offers.
Pricing: what will it cost?
Amazon hasn’t published official consumer pricing for the Leo Nano — not for the hardware, and not for the monthly service. CEO Andy Jassy has said only that Leo’s “performance will come at a lower cost than alternatives,” which signals an intent to undercut Starlink without committing to numbers. Industry analysts, working from Starlink’s pricing history, are guessing a standard residential plan will land somewhere around $100–$120 a month, with the Nano priced as the cheapest of the three terminals. For context, Starlink’s Mini launched at $499 in 2024 and has since dropped to $299, while Starlink’s standard dish fell from $599 to $349. Amazon has a track record of entering markets with aggressive pricing, so it wouldn’t be a shock if the Nano launched below where Starlink Mini sits today — but until Amazon says so officially, treat any number you see as a guess.
Availability: when can you actually buy one?
This is where things get murkier. Amazon Leo (still widely known by its old name, Project Kuiper) opened an enterprise beta on April 8, 2026, with partners including Verizon, AT&T, Vodafone, JetBlue, Delta, and NASA testing the network. In his 2026 shareholder letter, Jassy pointed to a “mid-2026” commercial launch, and by early July, Amazon confirmed it had enough satellites in orbit to support continuous initial service across certain latitudes.
But “launch” and “you can order a Nano for your camping trip” aren’t the same thing. Amazon’s own FCC license requires half of its planned 3,236-satellite constellation — about 1,618 satellites — to be in orbit by July 30, 2026, and the company has already said publicly it will miss that deadline. It’s asked the FCC for a two-year extension while ramping up its launch cadence with United Launch Alliance and Arianespace. Analysts tracking the rollout expect any 2026 launch to be a limited commercial service aimed at enterprise, government, and mobility customers in specific regions — not a broad consumer rollout. Realistically, general residential availability, including being able to simply buy a Nano, looks more likely for late 2026 into 2027, starting with an initial slate of five countries: the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France, and Germany.
Key concerns to keep in mind
- Coverage gaps early on. With only a few hundred satellites in orbit versus Starlink’s 10,000+, early Leo Nano service will almost certainly be patchy outside whichever latitudes Amazon prioritizes first.
- Amazon is behind schedule. The company is already behind its own FCC-mandated deployment target and is seeking a waiver — a sign the buildout has been harder and slower than planned, partly due to a shortage of available rocket launch capacity across the industry.
- No confirmed pricing yet. Every dollar figure floating around right now is analyst speculation, not an Amazon announcement. Don’t plan a budget around it just yet.
- Real-world speeds are unproven. The 100 Mbps rating is a spec-sheet number. Starlink’s Mini is rated similarly but often performs better in practice; how the Nano holds up once real users are sharing the network is still untested.
- Setup details are thin. Amazon’s marketing shots show the Nano sitting freestanding outdoors, but it will almost certainly need a power cable, much like the Starlink Mini does. Full setup and power specs haven’t been published yet.
- It’s a first-generation product on a first-generation network. Amazon has committed more than $10 billion to this project and is still years from matching Starlink’s scale. Anyone considering an early Nano purchase should go in expecting the rough edges that come with any first-gen hardware.
Who this is actually for
Strip away the specs and the Nano really comes down to a handful of clear-cut use cases:
- Frequent travelers and remote workers who need reliable internet wherever they land — campsites, cabins, second homes, or countries with patchy local infrastructure — and don’t want to depend on hotel Wi-Fi or local SIMs.
- RV owners, van-lifers, and boaters who want connectivity that travels with the vehicle without permanently mounting a full-size dish.
- Backpackers, campers, and outdoor adventurers who need a lightweight, grab-and-go connection for safety, navigation, or simply staying in touch off-grid — something the Starlink Mini already serves well and the Nano is built to match or beat on size.
- Rural and underserved households as a secondary or backup connection, especially once pricing settles — though for a primary home connection, the higher-speed Leo Pro is the more sensible pick.
- Emergency responders, field teams, and pop-up operations (events, construction sites, disaster relief) that need to stand up connectivity fast in a location with no existing infrastructure.
Who it’s not really for: anyone needing a dependable primary internet connection today. Between the unconfirmed pricing, limited early coverage, and no firm ship date, the Nano isn’t a practical choice for someone who needs guaranteed service right now — that’s still Starlink’s territory, at least until Amazon Leo’s network matures.
The bottom line
The Amazon Leo Nano looks genuinely compelling on paper: smaller and lighter than the Starlink Mini, backed by Amazon’s engineering muscle and AWS infrastructure, and aimed squarely at the portable satellite internet niche Starlink has had mostly to itself for two years. But specs don’t make a network. Amazon Leo is still in build-out mode, running behind its own regulatory deadlines, without confirmed consumer pricing, and without a firm on-sale date for the Nano itself. For now, the sensible move is to watch the enterprise beta results and satellite launch cadence rather than pencil the Nano into a 2026 travel bag. If Amazon really does deliver on price the way it usually does, though, Starlink may finally have a real fight on its hands.
